IU Kelley Students Consult Puerto Viejo's New Skate Park

By Maureen Reilly

On the second day of the 2017 Alternative Break Program in Puerto Viejo, half of the group of Indiana University Kelley School of Business students volunteered at the First Baptist Church, right in the center of town.

The church is spearheading the initiative to build a brand new skate park for the youth of the community. This is an initiative that Orlando Brown and his niece Glenda Halgarson are truly passionate about, and were extremely excited to have our help in fulfilling their goals.

While there, we helped them develop their Facebook page, putting their vision into words for the community and supporters to see, and created a memorable logo for them to use for the skate park. In addition to the consulting work, we also painted a classroom that the church hopes to use for workshops, classes, and other community activities.

Although their main goal is finishing the skate park, the church hopes to make their entire plot of land a place where community members, especially the youth, can find an outlet other than the bars and clubs.

This skate park is truly an investment in the future of Puerto Viejo.
